When Does Gambling Become Too Much?

Many people enjoy going to a casino and playing a few games. To those people, there’s nothing wrong with taking a little time and money to go out and have a good time. Others have their hobbies and entertainment; this is just another form of entertainment.

As far as it goes, there’s nothing wrong with that viewpoint. But we must be aware that as in many other things, there is a risk of becoming addicted to gambling. This risk increases the more a person thinks they have to win; or the more they put themselves in a position where they have to win. That can come about due to seeing their gambling as a way of solving financial problems; feeling they have to prove themselves; or the pride of just plain beating the system.

I had a friend who started going to a casino every once in a while, with his wife and another couple. It started off innocently enough, as a weekend getaway for the two couples. They would go to relax and enjoy themselves, establishing a budget for their gambling money, and seeing that expense as just another form of entertainment.

Unfortunately, it didn’t stay that way for my friend. He soon found that he’d lost all his budgeted gambling money. That wasn’t really a problem, as he had his debit card with him, and there was an ATM machine conveniently located in the lobby of the casino. He decided to just pull out a little more money, so that he could continue playing.

He never bothered to tell his wife what he was doing. They went to the casino about once a month, and every time, he was pulling extra money out of their savings. He was losing that money as well. Within a year, he’d lost their entire life’s savings. When she found out, he lost her and their daughter as well.

Look at it as Entertainment

If you chose to gamble, you must realize that like everything else in life, it’s going to have a cost. While everyone loves to win, the reality is that you probably aren’t going to. So, the real question is, how much are you willing to lose?

You see, if gambling is your entertainment, then the money you lose is part of your entertainment expense on your budget. Thinking of it that way, it’s easy to rationalize the money you are spending. Not only that, but it gives you the ability to determine limits; specifically, limits on how much you’ll allow yourself to lose, before you call it quits.

I’ll say it again; you’ve got to start out with the question, “How much can I afford to lose?” That’s the real key. If you don’t ask yourself that question, then you’re likely to lose more than you can afford. It’s easy to get into that trap. You can think, “Oh, just one more hand and I’ll win it back.” Or, “I can gamble this money, then pay the bills with my winnings.” Be careful about that, you can’t be sure that you’ll have winnings to pay the bills with.

People who are convinced they are going to win are on the road to gambling addiction. They’ve just got to keep on going till they get it back; only, they really don’t get it back. They gamble until they lose it all, then they are forced to quit. Worse than that, then they are forced to face the fact that they don’t have the money for their other needs. That’s bad enough when one is single, but worse when it affects your family.

Keeping gambling as entertainment keeps it light, fun, and most of all non-addictive. It’s only when you get that attitude of having to win that you are in trouble. Don’t think that you are smarter than the game, because the truth is, nobody is.

Overcoming Legal Addictions is Difficult

There are many addictions out there that people have to deal with on a regular basis. In fact, it has been shown that almost anything can become an addiction for people with an addictive personality. Many times, you will find that there are different addictions that go together, and they can be hard to break. Gambling is an addiction that is frequently seen with others. One of the most common types of addiction that a gambling addiction is seen paired with is an alcohol addiction. Very frequently, it is also seen with other drug addictions, as well. There are many reasons for this.

Casinos make it easy to pair an alcohol addiction with a gambling addiction. On top of that, you will frequently see smoking along with these, since most casinos allow smoking. They also will usually give the gambler free alcohol, which for those with a weakness for it, can be hard to turn down.

Some people start gambling to try to help pay for other addictions that they may have. They do not realize that they lose money more often than they get it back. This can make it very difficult for those around them to understand their reasoning for the gambling, especially if the other addictions are unknown.

Any type of addiction is difficult to overcome. Many feel that legal addictions, such as gambling and alcohol, are the most difficult to overcome. Since they are not banned, and in some areas, they are even easily accessible, they can be very hard for those with these addictions to overcome them. If you or a loved one is dealing with an addiction, seeking help is the best way to overcome the addiction.

Gambling is a way of playing which was developed centuries ago. People from ancient times used to gamble on various games. Every country has its own version of gambling. This is not a surprising fact, as who could resist the charms of chance and luck combined with the mystery of who would be the lucky one of the day.

The standards were established with 52 playing cards and the king, queen and jack taken for a human feel in the game. The card games became quite popular among the royals and monarchies until it was played regularly by most of them.

It was interesting to the point of distracting people from their job. It was briefly banned in the U.S but was resumed during the 20th century. Gambling has a very rich history if you look into it. It carries a lot of tales and stories with it about its origin and the way it became popular all over the world.
